Rimbun Groundworks is a small Penang practice for landscape design, build and care — landed homes and small commercial properties across the island and Seberang Perai. Every job starts the same way: on the ground, in the space itself.
Four things we hold to.
No grand philosophy — just positions we can defend on site.
The site decides first.
Light, rain, levels and soil are settled long before we arrive. Reading them honestly — and designing with what is actually there — saves more money than any shortcut ever will.
The garden must work in year five, not just week one.
Anyone can make a garden look finished on handover day. We plan for the growth that comes after: spacing, pruning cycles and species that settle in and improve, rather than outgrow their welcome.
Honest scope, plainly stated.
If a request will not survive Penang's weather or your weekly routine, we say so before you pay for it. Proposals are itemised, so you know what you are getting — and what you are not.
Maintenance is part of the design.
A garden nobody can keep up with was designed badly, not lived in badly. We design for the care you can realistically give — and offer scheduled visits when you would rather hand it over.

The agreed direction is drawn up: layout, planting plan and material selections confirmed before work starts.

Groundwork, hardscape and planting proceed in sequence, with the site kept tidy and progress shared.

We hand over with simple care guidance, and maintenance visits are available if you want the garden looked after.

Landed homes are our core work — terrace front gardens, courtyards, side yards and the spaces left over after a renovation. We design for how families actually live outside: morning routines, children, laundry, pets and parking. Planting is chosen to look good on the care you have time for, not the care a plant tag imagines. Most projects are compact and specific — and built to still make sense years later.
Cafés, clinics, boutique retail and small offices — frontages that greet customers before the front door does. The approach is more disciplined than domestic work: tidy lines, durable surfaces, and planting that stays presentable between visits. Work is scheduled around trading hours where we can, and maintenance can be set on a fixed rhythm so the entrance never has an off week.
Designed to be looked after.
A beautiful handover photo means little if the garden looks tired by the next monsoon. So maintainability is designed in from the start — species matched to the care they will actually receive, access kept clear for pruning, edges set straight for a trimmer, and watering thought through once instead of improvised every dry spell.
It is also the honest budget conversation. A slightly simpler garden that is properly looked after outperforms an elaborate one left to run wild — and we will say so at proposal stage, while the plan can still change.
How plants & materials are chosen.
Nothing goes into a plan because it photographed well. Five checks come first.
- 01 — LIGHT
- Species are matched to the hours of direct sun a spot actually receives — full, part or deep shade. The commonest planting failure in Malaysian gardens is a sun plant living in a shaded yard.
- 02 — WATER
- Rain is generous but seasonal. We group plants by thirst, improve the soil to hold moisture, and mulch heavily so a dry fortnight does not undo good planting.
- 03 — GROWTH
- Every plant has a pace. Beds are sized for the mature plant, not the nursery pot, so the garden still makes sense two seasons on.
- 04 — AGEING
- Materials are chosen for how they weather here — timber that silvers, stone that softens, concrete that stains with dignity. Ageing well is a design outcome, not luck.
- 05 — AVAILABILITY
- We specify what Penang nurseries reliably stock. An exotic plant list looks impressive on paper and disappoints on delivery day.
